ROOMS OF THEIR OWN

The Rooms

The Writers’ Trust is an incredibly important organization dedicated to helping authors write. Their support and celebration of the writers in this country through recognition, residencies and significant financial awards ties in beautifully to this idea of the importance of creating space and freedom for writers to do what they do.

in which we choose to create have significance; the ephemera, the chair, the view or the

walls stared at for hours on end inevitably play a role in the creative process. Capturing these rooms, and the little bits and pieces of the person connected to them, feels like an alternative form of portraiture. I am indebted to the authors who have given me the opportunity to capture them.

The collection will be launched at the Writers’ Trust of Canada Awards Gala, November 10, in Toronto in celebration of their 50th Anniversary.

‘Rooms of Their Own’ is a nod to Virginia Woolf’s conviction that in order to a write, a writer really needs the space to do it — a “room of one’s own”. A physical space that is conducive to the act of writing and the freedom to immerse oneself in the creative process.
